The American Express® Gold Card is defiantly on of my favorite cards for building points with ease. When you have a family of six to feed, this is a really good one to earn quickly considering the points you get by buying groceries.

Let me show you some of those key features below.

Welcome Bonus:

New cardholders can earn 60,000 Membership Rewards® points after spending $6,000 within the first six months of card membership.

Rewards Structure:

4x Points at Restaurants: Earn 4 points per dollar spent at restaurants worldwide, on up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year; thereafter, 1 point per dollar.

4x Points at U.S. Supermarkets: Receive 4 points per dollar at U.S. supermarkets, on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year; then, 1 point per dollar.

3x Points on Flights: Accumulate 3 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or through AmexTravel.com.

Annual Fee:

The card carries an annual fee of $325.

Additional Benefits:

Dining Credits: Receive up to $120 in annual dining credits, distributed as $10 monthly, when using the card at participating partners.

Uber Cash: Enjoy up to $120 in annual Uber Cash, providing $10 monthly for Uber rides or Uber Eats orders in the U.S.

Resy Credit: Benefit from a $100 annual credit for dining purchases through Resy.

Dunkin’ Credit: Get up to $84 in annual credits, offering $7 monthly for purchases at Dunkin’.

No Foreign Transaction Fees: The card does not impose foreign transaction fees, making it suitable for international travel.

Is It Worth It?

Lets do the math.

If you spent $1,000 a month on groceries and another $300 a month on dining out, that would total $1,300. If you used the Gold card you would earn 5,200 points a month. Taken over the entire year, that is 62,400 a year. At the worst, these points are worth about $0.0155 per point.

Which means that your earning would be about $967.20 a year in travel value.

Keep in mind…this does not include the credits that you can utilize above. For me, I mostly use the Uber credit for Uber Eats every month. If you just use that credit, that gives you an additional $120 a year.

This is also not taking in consideration the welcome bonus that you can earn which is worth (at the worst) $930.

In my families case, this card is one of my best earner and totally worth the annual fee of $325.

Considerations:

This is a premium rewards credit card tailored for individuals who frequently spend on dining and groceries. It offers substantial rewards and a suite of benefits that can offset its annual fee if utilized effectively.

It would be worth calculating what you spend on the bonus categories and determine if it is worth it.

However, like always, it’s crucial to evaluate your personal spending patterns to determine if the rewards and perks justify the annual fee.
